Frequently Asked Questions

Q:
What is the $35.00 fee used for?
A:
$5.00 per player is paid to the City of Brookings for maintenance on the fields and complex, $10.00 per player is paid to the South Dakota State Soccer Association for supplemental insurance (required by the SDSSA for all players), $10.00 goes to BSA to help pay for equipment (balls, bags, reversible jerseys, T-shirts, flags, nets, cones, goals, etc). The remainder $10.00 is used by BSA for administration costs (coaching clinics and materials, referee training and development, stamps, printing, etc.). For additional players ($25.00 fee for each additional player in the same household).

Q:
It's past the registration deadline - can I still get my child on a team?
A:
You can send in the registration form and payment; however we will not guarantee your child will be placed on a team. In this case we will send back your check.

Q:
Is Brookings Soccer Association a part of the Park & Rec?
A:
No, the Soccer Association is a separate organization. The BSA is run completely by parent volunteers. Park & Rec does have the registration forms available and maintains the playing fields.

Q:
How do I know what division my child will play in?
A:
We have 5 basic divisions, U6, U8, U10, U12 and U14. U6 (Under 6) is the only division that is coed and consists of 5 year olds. U8B will have 6 and 7 year old boys. U8G will have 6 and 7 year old girls, etc. The age is what age they were as of July 31st, of the current year for the fall season. The same date is used for the spring session. The teams remain the same from fall to spring session. Occasionally there are children who want to "play up" to the next age division, the Board of Directors reviews those on an individual basis. Players are never allowed to "play down" a division.

Q:
My child is 5 years old but does not attend Kindergarten yet, can they still play soccer?
A:
They do need to be 5 years old by July 31st, of the fall season in order to be able to play soccer. They do NOT need to be enrolled in Kindergarten.

Q:
What do I need to do if I want my child to play in a different age division?
A:
Players/parents desiring to move to an older age group must request permission in writing from the BSA Board of Directors. Requests will be granted/denied based on individual circumstances.

Q:
How are the teams selected?
A:
Registered players will be assigned to teams by computer according to age, gender and skill level. New teams will be formed for each fall season. Placement of players during the spring playing season will be made on a space available basis. New teams will be created only if sufficient new players have registered to play. NO SPECIAL REQUESTS FOR LEAGUE, TEAM OR COACH WILL BE ACCEPTED OR HONORED. It is the intent of BSA to make all teams within each age and/or gender grouping balanced in regards to skill and ability. A parent may make written request that their child NOT be placed on a specific team. Such requests must be made prior to team formation.

Q:
What if no one volunteers to coach my child's team?
A:
If no volunteer coach is available when the team is formed, the association will contact each parent on the team requesting volunteers. If no one agrees to take responsibility for the team at this point, the team will be disbanded and money will be refunded.
